Description
Hirschmanniella mucronata is a specialized plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the Pratylenchidae family within the order Tylenchida. It is recognized as a significant pest in rice-producing regions, particularly in tropical and subtropical areas where rice is grown under submerged conditions.
The primary host for this pest is rice (Oryza sativa). The nematode is capable of surviving and multiplying in the roots of various aquatic and semi-aquatic weeds found in and around paddy fields, which serves as a critical reservoir for re-infestation of subsequent rice crops.
The biology of the nematode is adapted to aquatic environments. The life cycle comprises egg, four juvenile stages, and adult stages. Being a migratory endoparasite, it moves freely through the water and soil pores to invade new roots. High moisture content and flooding favor the movement and colonization of the root system by these parasites.
Damage occurs when the nematodes feed on the cortical tissues of the roots. This feeding leads to necrosis, stunted development, reduced nutrient uptake, and overall plant decline. Consequently, infested fields exhibit reduced tillering, leaf yellowing, and significantly lower grain yields, often resulting in severe economic losses for farmers.
