Description

Systematic position: Hirschmanniella oryzae belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Tylenchida, and family Pratylenchidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive migratory endoparasitic nematodes affecting rice production worldwide, particularly in submerged cultivation systems.

Host plants: The primary host is rice (Oryza sativa). However, this nematode has a broad host range, including various aquatic weeds and grasses, which act as alternative hosts, allowing the nematode to persist in the soil and irrigation channels between rice cropping seasons.

Biology and lifecycle: The nematode spends most of its life cycle within the root cortex of the host plant. It enters the roots and moves intracellularly, consuming cell contents. The development process is closely linked to water availability and soil temperature, with optimal conditions being consistently warm and wet, typical of the rice-growing environment.

Damage and economic impact: Feeding by Hirschmanniella oryzae leads to root necrosis, discoloration, and subsequent rotting. The damaged root system cannot efficiently uptake water and nutrients, resulting in stunted plant growth, chlorosis, reduced tillering, and significant grain yield losses. In severe cases, large patches of the crop may show signs of decay.
