Thorne's root lesion nematode
Hirschmanniella thornei
Description
Hirschmanniella thornei is a species of migratory endoparasitic nematodes belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. This nematode is a significant plant pathogen known for its ability to infest the root systems of various economically important crops, often going unnoticed until the damage to the plant becomes severe.
The nematode exhibits a wide host range, primarily targeting cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and rice. Additionally, it can thrive on various vegetable crops and leguminous plants. Many wild grass species and weeds act as alternative hosts, which facilitates the persistence of the nematode population in agricultural fields from one growing season to the next.
The biological cycle of Hirschmanniella thornei involves continuous movement within the root cortex. As an endoparasite, it penetrates the roots and feeds on the cortical cells, causing cell destruction and creating pathways for further tissue degradation. Their life cycle is influenced by soil temperature and moisture levels, with optimal development occurring in well-aerated, moist soil environments.
Damage caused by this pest is characterized by lesion formation on the roots, which disrupts the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients. This systemic stress manifests as stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting in the above-ground parts of the plant. Secondary infections by fungi and bacteria are frequently associated with the damage, leading to extensive root rot.
Effective management strategies include the following:
- Implementation of strictly monitored crop rotations using non-host crops.
- Application of certified, nematode-free seeds or planting materials.
- Maintenance of optimal soil nutrition to help plants withstand infestation stress.
- Regular soil analysis to monitor nematode population densities.
- Use of chemical control measures (nematicides) only when population thresholds exceed economic damage levels.
