Hirschmanniella zostericola is a significant species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Pratylenchidae within the order Tylenchida. This organism is primarily recognized for its role as an endoparasite, thriving in moist environments and coastal habitats where it causes substantial stress to its host plants.

The primary hosts of this nematode include various species of aquatic and semi-aquatic plants, most notably seagrasses like Zostera marina. By invading the cortical tissues of the roots, the nematode extracts essential nutrients, disrupting the plant's ability to maintain homeostatic functions and grow effectively.

The life cycle of Hirschmanniella zostericola is highly adapted to water-saturated substrates. After hatching from eggs, the juvenile stages migrate through the water or wet soil to locate a suitable root system.
