Holhymenia is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Coreidae, commonly known as leaf-footed bugs. These insects are specialized phytophages that feed primarily on the sap of plants. While they are often considered minor pests in various ecosystems, their ability to aggregate in large numbers on specific host plants makes them a concern for commercial growers in their native geographical regions.

The host range of Holhymenia includes various plant species, particularly those in the Solanaceae and Passifloraceae families. By using their piercing-sucking mouthparts, they extract plant fluids, which leads to metabolic stress within the host. If left uncontrolled, heavy infestations can lead to significant yield losses, especially in high-value greenhouse or orchard crops.

The biology of these insects follows a hemimetabolous development cycle. It consists of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The adults are known for their distinct morphology, often featuring expanded or flattened tibiae on their hind legs. Their reproduction is closely tied to favorable temperatures, allowing for continuous generations in tropical climates throughout the year.

Damage caused by Holhymenia is characterized by localized tissue necrosis, plant wilting, and potential fruit deformity. As they feed, they inject saliva containing enzymes into the plant tissue, which causes chlorosis and can eventually kill individual leaves or shoots. Furthermore, the lesions created by their feeding serve as entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi or bacteria, worsening the overall damage.
