Japanese leaf katydid

The Japanese leaf katydid (Holochlora japonica) is a member of the order Orthoptera and the family Tettigoniidae. This insect features a bright green coloration that serves as perfect camouflage among leaves. Adult specimens reach 40–50 mm in length and possess long wings that extend well beyond the abdomen, allowing them to migrate efficiently between host plants.

This species is a generalist feeder, but it poses a significant threat to various trees and shrubs. Primary hosts include citrus trees, apples, pears, grapes, and various ornamental species. In commercial nurseries, the katydid is particularly destructive as it feeds on terminal shoots, which can severely stunt growth and cause abnormal branching patterns in young saplings.

The life cycle of the Japanese leaf katydid consists of one generation per year. Females utilize their sickle-shaped ovipositors to deposit eggs directly into the leaf tissue or shallow cuts made in the bark of young twigs. Nymphs progress through five instar stages; they resemble adults but lack functional wings until they reach their final molt, emerging as winged adults ready to mate.

The pest is primarily nocturnal, consuming foliage, flowers, and developing fruits. Damage is characterized by irregular, ragged edges on leaves and deep, crater-like holes in fruit flesh. High population densities can lead to severe defoliation, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, weakens the overall health of the tree, and often results in significant fruit drop.

Management and control strategies involve:

• Nocturnal monitoring to detect early infestation levels.
• Targeted application of insecticides during the nymphal stages for effective control.
• Removal and destruction of pruning materials containing egg-laying sites.
• Encouragement of natural predators such as birds, mantids, and spiders in the garden ecosystem.
• Implementing cultural practices that support vigorous growth to help plants withstand light feeding damage.
