Systematic position. Holochlora nawae belongs to the order Orthoptera, family Tettigoniidae (bush crickets). This species is a specialized phytophage that has become a significant pest in various regions of East Asia, particularly affecting orchard crops and ornamental plants in countries like Japan.

Host plants. The primary specialization of this species includes trees and shrubs. The greatest economic damage is caused to citrus orchards (lemon, mandarin, orange). The pest has also been observed on various ornamental plants, tea bushes, and certain fruit-bearing species, where it feeds extensively on leaves and developing fruits.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Holochlora nawae is closely tied to seasonal changes. The pest typically overwinters in the egg stage. Females deposit eggs inside plant tissues, most commonly along leaf margins or in young shoots, using their ovipositor to create incisions. In spring, nymphs emerge and undergo several developmental stages, eventually maturing into adults characterized by a vibrant green coloration that provides excellent camouflage.

Damage and harmfulness. Both adults and nymphs maintain a cryptic lifestyle, feeding on leaves and fruit. Typical signs of infestation include chewed leaf edges and deep cavities gnawed into young fruit. High population densities can lead to significant defoliation and a reduction in the marketability of citrus crops, resulting in substantial financial losses for agricultural producers.

Protection measures. Managing this pest requires an integrated approach. Key strategies include:

• Monitoring population levels using light traps or systematic visual inspection of the canopy.
• Application of registered contact-stomach insecticides during periods of peak nymph emergence.
• Cultural practices, such as canopy pruning, to improve airflow and reduce the site's suitability for the pest.
• Biological control through the use of natural enemies, such as egg parasitoids, that help regulate the population density.
