Holotrichia consanguinea

Description

Holotrichia consanguinea is a significant member of the Scarabaeidae family within the order Coleoptera. Recognized globally as a destructive soil-borne pest, it poses a severe threat to sustainable agriculture, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, where its populations can escalate rapidly under favorable environmental conditions.

This species is considered a highly polyphagous insect. Its larval stages, commonly referred to as white grubs, primarily infest the roots of various economically vital crops such as groundnut (peanut), sugarcane, maize, sorghum, and potatoes. Adults act as defoliators, feeding on the foliage of a wide range of forest trees and commercial crops.

The biology of this pest is fundamentally tied to the rainy season. Adult beetles emerge from the soil after the first monsoon showers to mate and feed. Females then return to the soil to lay eggs. The larvae typically go through three instars, during which they live underground and consume root tissues, significantly impacting the structural and physiological integrity of the host plants.

Damage caused by larvae includes the systematic destruction of root systems, leading to rapid wilting and eventual plant death, often appearing in patches across a field. In cases of high population density, entire crop stands can be decimated. Foliar damage by adults is equally detrimental, as severe defoliation reduces the photosynthetic capacity of affected plants.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach (IPM):

  • Deep summer plowing to expose larvae to avian predators and desiccation.
  • Installation of light traps during the peak beetle emergence period.
  • Application of soil-active insecticides during planting.
  • Biological control using entomopathogenic fungi or nematodes.
  • Crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
