Holotrichia beetle

The Holotrichia diomphalia is a significant soil-borne pest classified within the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. Primarily found in East Asian agricultural regions, this beetle is recognized as a major threat to field crops, often causing severe economic losses through root damage and subsequent plant physiological stress.

This pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it infests a wide range of host plants. Key agricultural crops susceptible to Holotrichia larvae include cereals such as corn and wheat, root crops like potatoes and sweet potatoes, and legumes like soybeans and peanuts. The wide host range makes it a persistent problem that can survive across diverse crop rotations.

The biological cycle of this insect is prolonged, typically spanning two to three years. The most destructive stage is the larval stage, characterized by a C-shaped body that resides in the root zone. Throughout their development, larvae undergo multiple molts while feeding incessantly on plant roots, which significantly hampers the crop's ability to maintain structural integrity and nutrient absorption.

Damage assessment reveals that the primary harm is caused by root pruning. When larvae feed on the roots, they disrupt the vascular transport of water and nutrients. Consequently, affected plants exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and sudden wilting. Severe infestations often lead to complete crop failure, creating large bare patches in fields that are difficult to mitigate once the damage has occurred.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Cultural practices such as deep autumn plowing effectively expose larvae to predators and environmental stress. Biological control agents, including entomopathogenic fungi and nematodes, provide sustainable options for suppression. In cases of high economic threshold levels, localized soil-applied insecticides remain a critical component to protect high-value crops.
