Holotrichia horishara is a dangerous soil-dwelling pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This species is widely distributed in East Asian countries and poses a significant threat to agriculture by damaging the root systems of both young seedlings and mature plants.
The pest affects a wide range of crops, including cereals, legumes, vegetables, and industrial crops. The most severe damage occurs in nurseries, where the larvae destroy the roots of young trees, leading to mass mortality of planting material and substantial economic losses for agricultural producers.
The biology of this species is closely linked to its soil-based lifecycle. Adult beetles feed on the foliage of trees and shrubs. After mating, females lay eggs in moist soil. The larvae, which pass through several instars, live underground, feeding on organic matter and living plant roots, completing their development in one or several years depending on local climatic conditions.
The damage manifests as wilting and subsequent plant death due to the destruction of the root system. At high population densities, the larvae can completely strip the root ball, leaving the plant highly susceptible to secondary infections and drought stress. Visually, damaged areas often appear as patches of stunted or dead crops in fields or intensive cultivation zones.
Control measures require an integrated approach: applying insecticides for seed treatment or soil incorporation, practicing proper crop rotation, and performing deep autumn plowing to disrupt larval habitats. Biological control methods, such as the use of entomopathogenic fungi and nematodes, are also effective in naturally reducing the pest population within the soil profile.
