Holotrichia morosa

Holotrichia morosa is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Scarabaeidae family, within the order Coleoptera. This species is widely recognized as a destructive "white grub" in various parts of Asia, frequently causing severe infestations in both arable crops and forestry nurseries due to its soil-dwelling larval stage.

This pest has a broad host range, feeding on the roots of numerous economically important crops. Major hosts include soybeans, peanuts, corn, potatoes, and sugar beets. Furthermore, the larvae can cause devastating damage to young nursery seedlings of fruit and timber trees by severing taproots and feeder roots, leading to plant stunting or death.

The biology of Holotrichia morosa involves a multi-year life cycle, where larvae spend most of their time beneath the soil surface. Adult beetles are primarily nocturnal, feeding on the foliage of broad-leaved trees during the mating season. After mating, females deposit eggs into moist, organic-rich soil, where the hatching larvae immediately begin their destructive feeding phase.

Damage is characterized by irregular patches of wilted or dead plants throughout the field. Because the larvae remain hidden underground, infestations are often discovered only when significant damage has already occurred. Their feeding activity compromises the root architecture, making the plants highly susceptible to drought stress and secondary fungal infections.

Effective management strategies rely on a combination of techniques:

• Deep plowing or mechanical tillage to expose larvae to natural predators like birds and environmental heat.
• Application of granular or systemic soil insecticides during the planting phase to protect sensitive roots.
• Monitoring adult beetle activity using light traps or pheromone lures to time insecticide applications accurately.
