Holotrichia serrata
Holotrichia serrata
Description
Holotrichia serrata is a destructive species of scarab beetle (family Scarabaeidae, order Coleoptera). This beetle is widely recognized as a significant pest in agricultural sectors, particularly in India, where it poses a major threat to the cultivation of several economically important crops.
The pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of plant species. The grubs (larvae) of Holotrichia serrata are the primary destructive stage, living underground and feeding voraciously on the root systems of crops such as sugarcane, groundnut, sorghum, pearl millet, and various fruit trees.
The life cycle of the beetle is typically annual and is closely synchronized with environmental factors, particularly monsoon rainfall. Upon the arrival of the first significant rains, adult beetles emerge from the soil to mate. Females then burrow back into the soil to oviposit, starting the development cycle which includes egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages.
Damage caused by this pest is often severe and can lead to total crop loss. The feeding activity of the grubs severs the plant's connection to soil nutrients and water, causing seedlings to wilt and mature plants to become stunted or die. In addition, adult beetles feed on the foliage of various tree species at night, causing further defoliation.
Managing Holotrichia serrata requires a strategic Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to minimize damage:
- Summer plowing to expose grubs and pupae to predators and heat.
- Mass trapping of adult beetles using light traps during the emergence period.
- Application of entomopathogenic fungi or nematodes to biologically suppress larval populations.
- Application of soil-applied insecticides near the root zone during the peak growth stages of the grubs.
- Crop rotation to reduce the suitability of the field for the pest's reproductive cycle.
