Palm weevil

Systematic position. The pest Homalinotus coriaceus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (true weevils). It is a specialized insect pest known for its high affinity to various species within the Arecaceae family, where it spends the majority of its life cycle.

Host plants. This weevil primarily targets palm trees, including economically significant species like the coconut palm and various ornamental palms. The insect is attracted to plants that are already experiencing stress or have existing mechanical injuries, which serve as entry points for oviposition.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult females oviposit into the soft tissues of the palm, such as the crown or near the leaf axils. The emerging larvae bore into the internal tissues, feeding extensively on the stem and crown, which serves as a highly nutritious substrate that supports rapid development.

Character of damage and harmfulness. The damage is primarily caused by larval tunneling, which destroys the internal vascular tissues of the palm. This feeding activity disrupts the plant's ability to transport nutrients and water, eventually leading to crown collapse, yellowing, and plant death. Furthermore, the larval galleries provide an entry path for secondary pathogens, such as fungi, that further compromise plant health.
