Florida hoplia

Systematic position: The Florida hoplia (lat. Hoplia floridana) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Scarabaeidae family. Known primarily as a regional pest in Florida, this scarab beetle is ecologically specialized for specific sandy soil habitats and native plant communities that define its geographical range.

Crops damaged: This pest primarily affects a variety of ornamental shrubs, trees, and native plants. Both the adult beetles and the larvae (white grubs) pose a significant threat. While adults are foliage and flower feeders, the larval stages live underground, focusing their feeding activity on the root systems of healthy plants.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females lay eggs in moist, sandy soil, where the larvae develop over several months, consuming root tissues. As they mature, they pupate in the soil before emerging as adult beetles, typically synchronized with seasonal rainfall patterns that trigger their flight activity.

Damage and economic impact: Adult beetles create irregular holes in leaves and may completely strip blooms, significantly impacting the visual quality of landscaping and nursery crops.
