Hoplia beetle

The Hoplia beetle (Hoplia parvula) is a destructive soil-dwelling pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This species is predominantly found in southern regions, where its presence can lead to significant economic losses in field crops, orchards, and vineyards due to its aggressive feeding habits.

This pest is a polyphagous insect, meaning it targets a wide variety of cultivated plants. Typical hosts include emerging cereal seedlings, maize, sunflowers, fruit trees, and grapes. The larvae live in the soil and feed on root systems, while the adult beetles (imago) feed on above-ground structures such as foliage, buds, and flowers.

The biological development of this species is heavily dependent on soil conditions and temperatures. The life cycle typically spans several years, with larvae undergoing multiple molts and overwintering at greater depths to survive cold weather. Adult emergence usually coincides with the spring warming of the soil, at which point the beetles become highly active and mobile during daylight hours.

The damage caused by these insects is two-fold. Larval feeding on roots leads to plant wilting, stunted growth, and in severe cases, plant mortality due to the destruction of the water and nutrient uptake capacity. Meanwhile, adult beetles skeletonize or create holes in leaves, significantly reducing the photosynthetic area and weakening the plant's defense mechanisms against secondary infections.

To effectively manage and control Hoplia parvula, agronomists recommend an integrated management approach:

• Deep autumn plowing to expose and destroy overwintering larvae in the soil profile.
• Rigorous crop rotation cycles to disrupt the pest's life cycle.
• Application of soil-incorporated insecticides during sowing or transplanting stages.
• Foliar applications of contact or systemic insecticides targeting adult beetles during their peak flight activity.
