Hoplochelus (Hoplochelus marginalis) is a significant beetle pest belonging to the family Scarabaeidae within the order Coleoptera. This insect is primarily recognized as a major threat to agricultural productivity in regions where it has been introduced, causing substantial economic losses, particularly in sugarcane cultivation sectors.

The primary crop affected by this species is sugarcane. The larvae of the beetle live in the soil and feed extensively on the root systems of the plants. This feeding activity severely damages the plant's ability to absorb essential nutrients and water, leading to stunted growth, reduced sugar content, and, in severe cases, the complete death of the crop stands.

The biology of Hoplochelus follows a typical scarab life cycle, which lasts approximately one year. The eggs are deposited in the soil, and the resulting larvae pass through several instars, feeding on organic matter and living roots. The pupal stage also occurs in the soil, and adults emerge to mate, continuing the cycle in the following season.

The damage caused by this pest is often insidious because it occurs below the soil surface. By the time symptoms of yellowing or plant wilting appear above ground, the root system is often already severely compromised. Economic impact is high because the loss of root integrity renders the sugarcane susceptible to secondary infections and increases the costs of field management.

Control strategies are designed to mitigate population levels:
