Description

The mining scale (Howardia biclavis) is a destructive species of armored scale insect belonging to the family Diaspididae. It is notoriously difficult to manage because, unlike many other scale insects, it tends to burrow into the plant tissue, creating tunnels or pits under the bark or epidermal layers.

This pest has a very broad host range, infesting numerous species of ornamental plants, fruit trees, and forest trees. Common hosts include hibiscus, coffee, citrus, gardenia, and various species of Ficus. It is frequently encountered in greenhouses and tropical climates where it can thrive year-round.

The life cycle begins with the egg stage, followed by the mobile crawler stage. Once the crawlers find a suitable feeding site on the host plant, they insert their mouthparts to feed on plant sap. Subsequently, they secrete a waxy substance that hardens into a protective cover, effectively shielding the insect from environmental factors and many contact pesticides.

The damage caused by the mining scale is significant. Feeding leads to leaf yellowing, stunted growth, and dieback of twigs and branches. Because they reside partially embedded in the plant tissue, the presence of the pest is often accompanied by distinct swelling, bark cracking, and structural deformity of the host's surface tissues.

Effective control measures require a strategic approach. Systemic insecticides are generally the most effective as they are transported through the plant's vascular system to the feeding site. Horticultural oils can also be applied to smother the insects, but complete eradication often requires repeat applications combined with rigorous sanitation of infested plant materials.
