Description

The bindweed leafhopper (Hyalesthes obsoletus) is a member of the Cixiidae family within the order Hemiptera. This insect is primarily recognized as a significant agricultural pest due to its role as the main vector of the stolbur phytoplasma, which severely affects various vegetable crops.

The pest typically infests a wide range of solanaceous plants, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and potatoes. It also maintains a strong symbiotic relationship with the field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis), which acts as the primary reservoir for the pathogens it transmits to cultivated crops.

The life cycle of Hyalesthes obsoletus is univoltine. It overwinters as nymphs in the soil, feeding on the roots of host plants. Adults emerge in early summer, moving to the above-ground parts of the plants where they feed on sap and transmit the phytoplasma through their saliva.

Feeding damage is characterized by chlorosis, leaf curling, and stunted growth of the affected plants. The indirect damage caused by the transmission of stolbur is far more destructive, often resulting in complete crop failure, deformed fruits, and the total decline of plant health in infected fields.
