Black pine beetle

Systematic position: The black pine beetle (Hylastes angustatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. As a member of the bark beetle group, it is recognized as a significant pest of coniferous trees, particularly in forestry operations where it targets the root system rather than the canopy of the host trees.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this beetle are species within the Pinaceae family, with Pinus sylvestris being the most commonly affected species. It also occasionally attacks spruce (Picea) and fir (Abies) species. Damage is most severe in nurseries and newly established forest plantations, where young seedlings are highly susceptible to early season attacks.

Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles are small, elongated, and dark in color, typically measuring 3–4 mm in length. The insect completes its life cycle over one year. Overwintering occurs primarily in the adult stage within the soil near the root collar of host trees or in the leaf litter. Spring emergence occurs as temperatures rise, leading to rapid colonization of new susceptible planting sites.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The beetles feed on the bark of the root collar and primary roots of young trees, effectively girdling the host. This process disrupts nutrient flow, leading to rapid wilting and tree death.

Management and control: Control measures emphasize silvicultural practices rather than large-scale insecticide application. In nursery settings, the use of systemic insecticides during pre-planting treatment and the promotion of biological control agents are effective in maintaining the population of Hylastes angustatus below economic thresholds.
