Taxonomic position: The shiny pine bark beetle (Hylastes fulgidus) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. Unlike many other bark beetles that attack trunks, this species focuses its activity on the root collars and root systems of coniferous trees, acting as a significant underground pest.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this beetle are pine species (Pinus). It is also capable of infesting spruce (Picea) stands. It is particularly damaging in nurseries and newly planted forest stands, where the seedlings are already stressed by transplanting or environmental conditions, making them vulnerable to beetle attacks.

Biology and life cycle: Adults are small, dark beetles that emerge from overwintering sites in the soil or root remnants during early spring. They migrate to the root collars of host trees to excavate gallery systems. The females lay eggs in these galleries, and the emerging larvae feed extensively on the inner bark and phloem, completing their life cycle within the root tissues before pupating.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The beetle causes damage by girdling the root collar, which disrupts the tree's vascular system. This prevents the flow of water and nutrients, leading to yellowing of needles, wilting, and eventually the death of the tree. In pine stands, high population densities can lead to significant seedling mortality, reducing the overall success of forest regeneration.
