Description

The linear pine beetle (Hylastes linearis) is a destructive species belonging to the Curculionidae family, subfamily Scolytinae. As a specialized forest pest, it primarily targets conifers, playing a significant role in the degradation of young pine stands and reforestation areas.

This beetle is strictly associated with pine species (Pinus spp.). It prefers stressed or freshly felled trees, as well as saplings and young natural regeneration. Its presence is often indicative of poor forest hygiene or high levels of logging residue remaining in the forest after harvesting activities.

The life cycle involves adult beetles overwintering in the soil near the root collars of host trees or under the bark of stumps. In the spring, they emerge to feed and locate suitable breeding sites. The females construct galleries in the root bark and roots, where they deposit eggs, leading to larval development that consumes the inner bark layers.

The damage caused by the linear pine beetle is particularly severe at the root collar level. By disrupting the tree's vascular system, the larvae and adults prevent the transport of nutrients and water. This manifests as chlorosis, needle browning, and rapid mortality of young pines, often occurring in patches across the stand.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include meticulous forest hygiene, such as the removal of stumps and debris where the beetles breed. Implementing trap logs during the flight period allows for the monitoring and mechanical removal of adult populations. In nursery environments, prophylactic insecticide applications at the base of the stem can protect young stock from infestation.
