The black pine bast beetle (Hylastes porculus) is a beetle species belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. It is a recognized pest of significant economic importance in forestry, particularly within conifer-dominated ecosystems where it targets weakened or recently felled trees.
The host range primarily includes species of the genus Pinus and Picea. The beetle is particularly attracted to the root collars and root systems of young seedlings, as well as the bark of stumps and stressed mature trees, making it a critical pest in nursery and reforestation settings.
Its biological cycle is intricately linked to the host's physiological condition. Adults typically overwinter in the soil or under bark. With the onset of spring, they emerge to infest suitable hosts. Females construct gallery systems under the bark of the roots or the lower trunk, where they deposit eggs, leading to larval feeding that damages the phloem and cambium layers.

By disrupting the nutrient flow through the root system, the feeding larvae and adults cause the tree to lose vigor, leading to yellowing needles and eventual mortality.
