Description
The black pine bark beetle (Hylastes salebrosus) is a significant insect pest belonging to the Curculionidae family, specifically the Scolytinae subfamily. It is widely recognized in forest pathology for its destructive impact on coniferous tree species across various forest regions.
This beetle primarily infests coniferous species such as pines and spruces. It is particularly damaging in forest nurseries and young plantations, where the root systems of saplings and seedlings are vulnerable to colonization, often leading to large-scale losses in reforestation efforts.
Regarding its biology and lifecycle, the insect undergoes complete metamorphosis. Adults typically overwinter in the soil or forest litter near the base of host trees. As temperatures rise in the spring, the beetles emerge and actively seek out the root collars and root systems of stressed or weakened trees for mating and oviposition.
The primary damage is caused by adults boring galleries directly into the bark of the root collar and main roots. This girdling effect disrupts the tree's vascular system, preventing the transport of nutrients and water. As a result, affected plants exhibit chlorosis, wilting, and often die shortly after the infestation, causing significant economic damage.
