Fig bark beetle

Systematic position. The Fig bark beetle (Hylesinus fici) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae, specifically the subfamily Scolytinae. As a highly specialized pest, it is ecologically adapted to the physiological characteristics of plants in the Moraceae family, particularly the genus Ficus.

Host plants and impact. The species primarily infests the common fig tree (Ficus carica). While it shows a preference for physiologically weakened or stressed trees, it can act as a primary pest in dense plantations, causing extensive damage to the cambium layer. This activity restricts the transport of nutrients and water, severely compromising the health of the host tree.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults bore into the bark to construct egg galleries, where the female deposits her eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae mine their own galleries under the bark, feeding on the phloem. The insect usually completes its life cycle within the host wood, emerging as adults to start new infestations, with development timing influenced by ambient temperature.

Nature of damage. Signs of infestation include small circular exit or entry holes in the bark, often accompanied by frass (bore dust). Internal gallery systems disconnect the flow of nutrients, resulting in chlorosis, leaf drop, and shoot dieback. If the infestation is severe and left unmanaged, the tree may experience girdling, leading to rapid decline and potential death of the branches or the entire tree.

Protection measures. Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Recommended strategies include:

• Strict sanitation by pruning and destroying infested wood to remove breeding sites.
• Enhancing tree vigor through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization to increase resistance.
• Implementing regular inspections to detect early signs of bark beetle activity.
• Targeted application of insecticides during the adult flight period to prevent colonization of healthy wood.
