Description
The large spruce weevil (Hylobius assimilis) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a notorious pest primarily targeting coniferous forests. This insect is of great economic importance due to the damage it inflicts on young plantations and forest nurseries throughout the Eurasian continent.
The host range includes spruce, pine, fir, and larch. Young saplings, particularly those under the age of seven, are the most susceptible. The pest is frequently found in reforested areas where fresh stumps provide ideal breeding grounds, leading to high infestations of newly planted trees in the vicinity.
The biological cycle of the weevil is complex and involves overwintering as adults in forest litter or soil. Emerging in the spring, adults move to young host trees to feed on the bark. The larvae develop primarily under the bark of fresh stumps, where they tunnel through the inner bark and cambium, significantly weakening or killing the host tissue.
The damage caused by adults is characterized by irregular patches of missing bark at the base of young tree trunks. Heavy feeding often results in girdling, which disrupts nutrient flow and leads to the rapid death of the sapling. Larval feeding on roots and lower stems further contributes to the decline of trees in affected areas.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as stump removal after logging help reduce breeding habitats. Chemical control involves the application of insecticides to seedlings before planting to protect them during the most vulnerable early stages. Monitoring through the use of trap logs or pitfall traps is also essential for assessing population densities.
