The Okinawa pine weevil (Hylobius okinawanus) is a member of the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. This species is recognized as a significant pest affecting coniferous trees, particularly in the Ryukyu Islands and Japan, where it inflicts severe damage on forest plantations and nursery seedlings.

The primary host plants for this weevil are pine species (Pinus). Both larvae and adult beetles cause damage, but the larvae are particularly destructive as they tunnel through the phloem and cambium layer, effectively girdling the tree, which often leads to rapid decline or death of the infested plant.

The biological development of this pest is closely linked to the availability of stressed or fresh coniferous woody tissue. Females lay eggs in the bark of logs or the root collar of susceptible trees. The larval stage involves feeding inside the bark, and the duration of the entire cycle typically spans one to two years, depending on local climate conditions.

Infestation symptoms include localized girdling of the stems, excessive resin flow from wounds, and yellowing or wilting of the pine needles. Large outbreaks are frequently associated with forest management practices that leave behind stumps or slash, providing optimal breeding grounds for the weevil population to increase.

Effective management requires integrated pest management strategies. Key actions include the prompt removal and disposal of infested wood, sanitation logging to eliminate breeding sites, and the use of pheromone-baited traps for monitoring and mass trapping. In forest nurseries, chemical control with appropriate insecticides may be necessary during peak activity periods to protect young stock.
