The Pine weevil (Hylobius pinastri) is a beetle species within the Curculionidae family, known for its destructive impact on coniferous forests. As a member of the weevil group, it is characterized by its prominent rostrum and a dark, robust body. This insect is widely distributed across temperate forest ecosystems where conifers are the dominant species.
The primary hosts of this pest include pine, spruce, and fir trees. The weevil is particularly notorious for damaging young saplings in reforestation areas and nurseries. While the larvae develop in the bark of fallen trees or stumps, the adults cause significant harm by feeding on the bark of healthy, young transplants, often targeting the area near the root collar.
