Description
The native elm bark beetle (Hylurgopinus rufipes) is a member of the Curculionidae family, specifically within the Scolytinae subfamily. It is a significant pest in North America, notorious for its role as a primary vector for the fungal pathogen causing Dutch elm disease, affecting various elm species.
This insect primarily targets elm trees, including American, slippery, and rock elms. Unlike some other bark beetles, it frequently attacks both healthy, stressed, and even dying trees, making it a persistent threat to urban forest canopies and native woodlands.
The biological cycle involves overwintering as adults within the bark at the base of elm trees. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on the bark of young twigs before moving to the trunk to construct egg-laying galleries under the bark, where the larvae feed on the cambium layer.
The damage caused by Hylurgopinus rufipes is twofold. First, larval tunneling disrupts nutrient and water transport within the tree. Second, and more critically, adults transmit the Ophiostoma fungus, which causes xylem vessel clogging, leaf wilting, and often the rapid death of the host tree.
