Native elm bark beetle
Hylurgopinus rufipes
Description
The native elm bark beetle, known scientifically as Hylurgopinus rufipes, is a wood-boring insect belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). Unlike some other introduced species, this beetle is native to North America, but it remains a significant pest due to its capacity to vector the fungal pathogens responsible for Dutch elm disease.
This species primarily attacks members of the genus Ulmus. It displays a preference for weakened, stressed, or recently felled elm trees. However, when populations reach high densities, the beetles will readily attack healthy trees, especially during their maturation feeding phase, during which they introduce lethal fungi into the xylem of the host.
The beetle's life cycle is complex and synchronized with the seasonal patterns of the host tree. Adults overwinter in the bark of healthy trees, often concentrating at the base of the trunk. In the spring, they migrate to the crown to feed, subsequently moving to suitable brood material to lay eggs. Larvae develop under the bark, constructing intricate galleries that disrupt the tree's vascular system.
Damage caused by Hylurgopinus rufipes is twofold: mechanical and pathological. Mechanical damage involves the excavation of tunnels in the phloem and cambium, which interferes with nutrient transport. The pathological impact is more severe, as the beetles introduce fungal spores directly into the tree, leading to systemic wilting, branch dieback, and the eventual death of the entire tree.
Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling this beetle. Key practices include:
- Sanitation, which involves the removal and proper disposal of infested wood to limit breeding sites.
- The use of systemic insecticides to provide a chemical barrier against feeding beetles.
- Frequent monitoring using pheromone-baited traps to gauge population trends.
- Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil management to reduce vulnerability to initial attacks.
