Host plants: The primary hosts include species of Pinus (pine), Picea (spruce), and Abies (fir). The pest is particularly destructive in nurseries, young plantations, and stands where trees are under physiological stress, making them susceptible to infestation.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves egg-laying in the bark of roots and the root collar. Adults overwinter in forest litter or soil near the host tree. Upon emergence in the spring, beetles seek out healthy or slightly weakened young trees to initiate colonization and larval development under the bark.

Nature of damage and pest status: Damage is caused by both adults and larvae feeding on the phloem and cambium layers. This feeding activity girdles the root collar, cutting off the supply of water and nutrients to the tree.
