Red-haired pine bark beetle

Systematic position: The red-haired pine bark beetle (Hylurgus ligniperda) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). This species is a significant forestry pest, known for its ability to infest pine trees across temperate regions of the world, often spreading through international timber trade.

Host plants: This insect primarily attacks pine species (Pinus), including Scots pine and Monterey pine. While it shows a strong preference for stressed or dying trees, such as wind-thrown logs or fresh stumps, it can also infest healthy young saplings if the beetle population density becomes sufficiently high within a specific area.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is largely dependent on ambient temperatures. Adults overwinter in the forest floor litter or at the base of host trees. During the warmer months, they emerge to seek out suitable hosts. Females bore into the bark, creating egg galleries where they deposit eggs. The larvae hatch and feed on the inner bark and cambium, creating extensive feeding tunnels that eventually disrupt the tree's health.

Damage and harmfulness: The primary harm caused by Hylurgus ligniperda is the destruction of the phloem and cambium layers. This mechanical damage interrupts the flow of nutrients and water, eventually leading to tree chlorosis and death. Common indicators of an infestation include:

• Frass (sawdust) accumulation at the base of the trunk;
• Small entry holes visible on the bark surface;
• Yellowing of needles in the tree canopy;
• Larval galleries visible when the bark is removed.

Protection measures: Effective management focuses on forest hygiene and sanitation. Removing infested trees and destroying logging slash (which serves as a breeding ground) are crucial practices. In high-value forestry areas or nurseries, chemical control with insecticides during peak flight periods is sometimes employed, along with the use of pheromone traps for monitoring and reducing adult beetle numbers.
