Description
Systematic position: The insect belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae. The genus Hyperodes (commonly associated with the Listronotus complex) encompasses species recognized as significant pests of various grass species and cereal crops.
Host plants: The pest primarily targets grasses, with a strong preference for Poa annua (annual bluegrass) and other fine-textured turfgrasses. Its host range makes it a particular problem in golf courses, sod farms, and pastures where these grasses are cultivated extensively.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle includes four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females oviposit into the stems or leaf sheaths of the host plants. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the crown and stem, feeding on internal plant tissues, which disrupts the vascular system of the host.
Damage and economic impact: Larval feeding is the primary cause of plant death. Initial symptoms include thinning of the turf and yellowing of the foliage, which can quickly progress to large necrotic patches. If left unmanaged, the infestation can lead to total loss of vegetation in affected areas, causing substantial financial costs for turf restoration.
