Hyperodes anthracinus

Hyperodes anthracinus is a species of weevil (family Curculionidae) within the order Coleoptera. This insect is recognized in agronomy as a specialized pest that targets various cereal crops, posing a threat to the stability and productivity of grain fields during the early stages of plant development.

The primary hosts for this pest include winter and spring wheat, barley, and rye. By feeding on the internal tissues of the stem or the root zone, the larvae can compromise the structural integrity of the plant. This dietary preference often leads to significant agricultural damage, particularly when environmental conditions favor the rapid proliferation of the beetle population.

The biology and lifecycle of this weevil are adapted to the phenology of host plants. Adults typically overwinter in the soil or crop debris, emerging in spring to feed and lay eggs near the plant base. Recommended practices include aggressive tillage to disrupt the lifecycle, proper crop rotation to break feeding cycles, and the elimination of volunteer cereals.
