Description
The fig bark beetle (Hypoborus ficus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). It is a well-known pest specifically targeting fig trees (Ficus carica). These small beetles are widely distributed in regions where fig cultivation is prevalent, particularly across the Mediterranean and adjacent areas.
The biology of Hypoborus ficus centers on its subterranean lifecycle beneath the bark. Adult beetles bore into the branches to establish galleries, where females lay their eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the cambium layer. Depending on the environmental temperature, the species can complete several generations throughout the growing season.
Damage caused by this beetle is primarily mechanical and physiological. The larval galleries disrupt the flow of sap, which is essential for the tree's health. Early signs of an infestation include the appearance of tiny entry holes on the bark and piles of fine frass. As the infestation progresses, leaves may yellow, and branches may wither or die entirely.
The infestation is often favored by drought stress or poor orchard management. Trees that are neglected or weakened by other factors are significantly more susceptible to attack. The cumulative effect of numerous galleries can lead to branch dieback and, in severe cases, the death of the entire tree if the beetle population is left unchecked.
Effective control measures require an integrated approach. The most critical step is orchard sanitation: regular pruning and immediate removal and burning of infested wood to disrupt the insect lifecycle. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization is essential to improve natural resistance. Chemical control is limited due to the concealed habitat of the larvae, but targeted insecticide applications against emerging adults can be effective during peak flight periods.
