Hypomeces

Hypomeces is a genus of weevils belonging to the Curculionidae family. The most prominent species, Hypomeces squamosus, is widely recognized as a serious agricultural pest in Southeast Asia. These beetles are characterized by their distinct scales, which give them a shimmering appearance and provide excellent camouflage on host foliage.

Taxonomically, the genus belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae. As members of the weevil group, they are distinguished by their elongated snout, which they use for feeding on plant tissues. Their ability to adapt to diverse environments makes them a persistent challenge in tropical farming systems.

The host range of Hypomeces is extensive, spanning numerous crops including citrus, mango, cotton, soybeans, and corn. Because of their polyphagous nature, they can shift between various wild and cultivated plants, maintaining high population levels throughout the growing season and ensuring consistent pest pressure on commercial plantations.

The biology of this pest involves a complete life cycle. The adults cause damage by consuming the leaves, typically starting from the edges, which results in irregular notches and significant defoliation. In contrast, the larvae reside underground, feeding on the root systems, which can severely compromise the plant's nutrient uptake and overall vigor, often going unnoticed until visible wilting occurs.
