Coffee berry borer

The coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) is a small beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). It is widely considered the most devastating pest of coffee plantations globally, significantly impacting production volumes and international trade quality standards.

This insect primarily attacks the fruits of coffee trees. The beetles penetrate the coffee cherries and tunnel into the seeds (beans), consuming the endosperm. This feeding behavior directly compromises the yield, as the damaged beans lose their commercial value and cannot be processed for high-quality consumption.

The biological cycle of the borer is closely tied to the development of the coffee cherry. Mated females drill into the fruit to lay their eggs. The entire lifecycle, including egg, larval, and pupal stages, occurs inside the cherry, which provides the insect with a protected environment against predators and many external environmental factors.

Damage is characterized by small boreholes at the blossom end of the berry. The tunnels created inside the beans facilitate the entry of microorganisms, causing rot and premature abscission of the fruit. In severe infestations, farmers may lose more than half of their potential harvest if effective control strategies are not implemented.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential to combat this beetle. Strategies include:

• Strict orchard sanitation by removing all remaining berries after harvest to break the reproductive cycle.
• Deploying mass trapping using methanol and ethanol attractants.
• Monitoring fruit infestation rates throughout the development stages.
• Utilizing biological control agents, such as specific fungi or parasitoid wasps.
