Description

The African coffee beetle (Hypothenemus africanus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). This small, yet highly destructive insect is a significant pest in coffee-growing regions, often acting as a primary driver of quality loss in raw green coffee beans.

This species primarily targets the fruits of the coffee tree. While its preference is strongly directed toward coffee, it exhibits polyphagous behavior, allowing it to survive on secondary host plants found in tropical ecosystems. This makes the total eradication of the pest from a plantation environment extremely challenging.

The life cycle of the beetle is completed entirely inside the coffee cherry. The adult female bores a hole into the fruit, where she deposits eggs within the developing seed. The larvae feed on the endosperm, causing extensive structural damage. This developmental pattern provides a significant barrier for farmers, as the larvae remain shielded from topical pesticide sprays.

The damage caused by Hypothenemus africanus manifests as reduced bean weight, poor cup quality, and susceptibility to secondary fungal infections. Heavily infested cherries frequently undergo abscission and drop prematurely, leading to significant yield losses. Furthermore, the presence of these beetles can lead to strict export rejections due to quality standards.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that emphasizes cultural controls. Key strategies include meticulous orchard sanitation, where all fallen or infected berries are harvested and destroyed to break the life cycle. While chemical interventions are possible, they must be timed precisely with the adult flight period to effectively minimize the population before they bore into the fruit.
