Systematic position. Hypothenemus birmanus is a small beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). Being a close relative of other major coffee-boring species, this beetle is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that thrives in warm, humid climates, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions.

Host plants. The primary hosts include coffee berries, where the insect can cause catastrophic yield losses. Furthermore, it is known to infest a variety of other crops, including legumes, macadamia nuts, and diverse tropical fruits. The pest is particularly problematic in storage facilities where various protein-rich and oily seeds are kept, as it can adapt to diverse food sources.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Hypothenemus birmanus is intimately tied to the host seed. Females bore into the fruit or seed to create galleries for egg-laying. The entire development from egg through larvae to adult happens inside the plant tissue. Due to its short life cycle, which can be completed in less than a month, populations can explode rapidly under favorable conditions.

Damage and harmfulness. The primary evidence of infestation is the presence of small, circular exit holes on the surface of seeds or berries. Internally, the larvae consume the embryo and endosperm, destroying the structure of the seed. This results in significant weight loss and complete degradation of the product's market value, rendering it useless for export or propagation.

Control measures. Protecting agricultural products from this beetle requires a multifaceted strategy focused on prevention and sanitation. Key practices include:
