Bolivian coffee berry borer

Systematic position of this pest places it within the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. As a member of the Hypothenemus genus, this beetle is a highly specialized wood-boring and fruit-boring insect that has evolved to colonize the reproductive structures of tropical plants, primarily coffee species.

The primary crops affected by this beetle are coffee trees (Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora). The insect specifically targets developing berries, entering the fruit through the floral remains and tunneling directly into the developing seed, which is the most economically valuable part of the plant.

Biology and lifecycle are intrinsically linked to the berry development of the coffee tree. The adult female bores into the berry and deposits eggs inside the seed. The entire developmental process from egg to adult occurs within the bean, protecting the insect from external factors. Given optimal climatic conditions, the pest completes its generation cycle in approximately five to six weeks.

Damage characteristics and economic impact involve the internal destruction of the bean, which leads to direct weight loss and significantly degraded cup quality. Infested beans often become shriveled or rot due to secondary fungal colonization. A high infestation rate can lead to massive yield losses, as the damage often remains hidden until the harvest and processing stages.

Control measures require a strict adherence to cultural practices and integrated management strategies. Effective protection depends on the following steps:

• Sanitary harvesting, ensuring that all berries—including the "leftovers"—are removed from the tree and the ground.
• Application of entomopathogenic fungi such as Beauveria bassiana to suppress pest populations.
• Utilizing mass-trapping systems with specific semiochemical attractants to reduce the population density during critical berry-filling stages.
