Systematic position: Hypothenemus columbi belongs to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae, and the subfamily Scolytinae. It is a wood-boring beetle of significant agricultural importance, known for its ability to infest fruits and seeds of specific tropical plants, primarily within the coffee-producing regions.

Crops affected: The primary host for this pest is the coffee plant (Coffea spp.). The beetle targets the maturing berries, penetrating the outer skin to reach the developing seeds. Its preference for specific biochemical compounds in the seeds makes certain cultivars particularly susceptible to infestation.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Hypothenemus columbi is mostly cryptic, occurring almost entirely inside the coffee berry. The adult female bores into the seed to create a gallery where she lays her eggs. Larvae develop within the seed, feeding on the endosperm. The duration of the life cycle is highly dependent on humidity and temperature, allowing for continuous generations in optimal tropical environments.

Nature of damage and severity: Infestation leads to a direct loss of seed mass and quality. Typical symptoms include small entry holes on the berry surface, often accompanied by necrotic tissue. In severe cases, the entire seed is hollowed out, leaving only a thin shell of fibers, which renders the harvest commercially worthless and prone to secondary mold infections.

Control measures: Managing this pest requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies to break the infestation cycle:

• Strict field sanitation by removing all remaining berries from the trees after harvest.
• Using pheromone-baited traps to capture adults and monitor population density.
• Applying biological control agents, such as specialized entomopathogenic fungi like Beauveria bassiana.
