Hypothenemus erectus is a species of beetle belonging to the subfamily Scolytinae within the Curculionidae family. Known as a significant pest, it primarily targets coffee plants. Its taxonomic position as a bark beetle highlights its ability to bore into plant tissues, specifically fruits and seeds, which distinguishes it from many other leaf-feeding agricultural pests.

The primary hosts for this pest are species of the Coffea genus. The beetle is well-adapted to the environment of the coffee cherry. By infesting the berries, the insect thrives in a nutrient-rich environment, which unfortunately results in direct devastation of the crop. The pest is widely recognized by agronomists in tropical regions for its ability to destroy entire yields if left unmanaged.

The biology and lifecycle of this beetle are closely tied to the host plant's phenology. The female beetle bores a hole into the fruit and lays eggs within the coffee bean. The larvae feed on the seed, completing their entire development cycle protected inside the cherry. The damage caused by Hypothenemus erectus is mainly focused on the bean, resulting in reduced weight and quality. The internal galleries created by the larvae and adults ruin the structural integrity of the coffee bean, often leading to secondary fungal infections. This damage is irreversible and renders the affected berries unsuitable for commercial processing, leading to significant economic losses for farmers.
