Description
Hypothenemus eruditus is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). This species is a notorious pest known for its small size and significant economic impact on tropical agriculture. It thrives in warm, humid environments, which makes it a persistent threat to coffee plantations and other botanical commodities worldwide.
The host range of this pest is remarkably broad, characterizing it as a polyphagous insect. Beyond its preference for coffee berries, it is frequently found damaging cocoa beans, macadamia nuts, various dried fruits, and the stems of woody plants. This diversity allows it to maintain populations even when primary host availability fluctuates.
The lifecycle is primarily internal to the host plant material. Mated females bore small entrance holes in the target berries or seeds and construct galleries where they deposit eggs. The entire developmental process from larva to pupa takes place inside the seed, ensuring the insect is protected from external environmental stressors and most pesticide applications.
Damage caused by Hypothenemus eruditus is severe and direct. Feeding by larvae destroys the endosperm of the seeds, leading to weight loss and reduced crop quality. In severe infestations, the internal structure of the berry is entirely consumed, making the produce commercially non-viable and facilitating secondary fungal infections.
