Coffee berry borer

Hypothenemus erythrinae is a species of beetle belonging to the subfamily Scolytinae (bark beetles) within the family Curculionidae. This tiny insect is a significant agricultural pest that causes extensive damage to various tropical fruit-bearing plants, with a particular affinity for coffee crops, leading to major economic losses globally.

The pest primarily targets the fruits of the Coffea species. However, due to its adaptability, it can infest a variety of other plants, including legumes and several woody species found in tropical and subtropical climates. Its ability to thrive in diverse plant environments allows it to maintain populations even when primary host plants are scarce.

The life cycle is characterized by the female beetle boring into the fruit to establish galleries. Inside these chambers, the female lays her eggs, and the emerging larvae feed directly on the pulp and the seeds of the berry. This internal feeding strategy protects the larvae from many external environmental factors and common contact insecticides.

The damage caused by Hypothenemus erythrinae is easily identified by small entrance holes on the berries. Infested berries often drop prematurely or become withered and rotten. The larvae consume the endosperm of the coffee bean, rendering the crop unmarketable and significantly reducing both the quality and quantity of the harvest.

Effective management of this pest requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to ensure long-term control. Key practices include:

• Rigorous field sanitation by removing and destroying all infested fruits.
• Consistent monitoring using traps baited with specific attractants.
• Timely harvesting to reduce the window of opportunity for beetle infestation.
