Description
Hypothenemus gracilis is a beetle species belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. As a member of the bark beetle group, it has evolved to specialize in infesting the reproductive organs of coffee trees, making it a critical pest in tropical agricultural ecosystems.
This pest primarily attacks coffee berries (Coffea spp.). The presence of the beetle can cause devastating losses to coffee producers, as it directly impacts the quality and quantity of the harvest. Its distribution is closely tied to regions with warm and humid climates where coffee cultivation is prevalent.
The life cycle of the insect is entirely dependent on the host plant. The female borer penetrates the berry and creates galleries within the seed, where she deposits her eggs. The larvae hatch and consume the interior of the coffee bean, completing their development within the safety of the fruit.
The damage is caused by the tunneling activity of both adults and larvae, which destroys the endosperm of the coffee bean. This leads to premature fruit drop, decreased bean density, and secondary infections from pathogens. Consequently, the affected harvest loses its economic value and fails to meet commercial standards.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach to handle this borer. It involves regular monitoring using pheromone traps, thorough harvesting of all berries to minimize host availability for the next generation, and the utilization of biological control agents like entomopathogenic fungi. Chemical control is limited by the beetle's protected habitat within the fruit.
