Coffee berry borer

The coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) is arguably the most destructive pest affecting coffee production worldwide. It is a small beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). Originating from Africa, it has successfully invaded almost every coffee-producing country, posing a continuous threat to global supply chains.

The primary host for this beetle is the fruit of the coffee plant. While it occasionally feeds on other plant materials, the coffee berry provides the specific chemical environment and nutritional profile necessary for the beetle's life cycle. The pest focuses on the beans within the cherry, making it difficult to reach with standard surface treatments.

The life cycle begins when a fertilized female bores into the coffee cherry, creating a tunnel that leads to the bean. Inside the bean, she lays her eggs. The larvae emerge and start feeding on the endosperm, the very part that makes the coffee product valuable. The entire transformation from egg to adult occurs within the protection of the bean, making the population management quite challenging.

The damage caused by the berry borer is significant and direct. Infestation results in premature berry drop, reduced bean weight, and lower market prices due to visible damage to the beans. Even after processing, infected beans retain holes and tunnels, which ruin the quality of the roast and introduce off-flavors, rendering them unsuitable for high-quality specialty coffee markets.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the standard for controlling this pest.

• Sanitary harvesting, including the removal of all remaining berries after the main harvest.
• Deployment of traps baited with methanol and ethanol to monitor and reduce populations.
• Biological control using the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana.
• Conservation of natural predators, such as specific parasitic wasps.
• Regular field monitoring to determine the appropriate timing for control actions.
