The island bark beetle (Hypothenemus insularis) is a small wood-boring insect belonging to the Curculionidae family, specifically the Scolytinae subfamily. Known for its ability to infest hard seeds and fruits, this species acts as a significant pest in various tropical and subtropical agroecosystems, often causing substantial economic losses.

This pest primarily attacks a variety of legumes and other commercial crops, boring into the seeds to feed on the internal tissues. Its high adaptability to different plant hosts makes it a difficult pest to manage once it has established a foothold in a farming region or an orchard.

The biological cycle of Hypothenemus insularis is primarily endophagous, meaning the larvae develop inside the seed.
