Coffee berry borer

Hypothenemus leprieuri is a tiny beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family, specifically the Scolytinae subfamily. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that primarily targets coffee production in tropical and subtropical regions across the globe.

This pest is highly specialized in feeding on the fruits of the coffee plant. It attacks the berries at various stages of development, boring through the pulp to reach the seeds within. While it is most notorious for damaging coffee, it can also infest other plant species that produce hard, nutrient-dense seeds capable of supporting larval development.

The life cycle of the beetle is almost entirely completed inside the coffee berry. The female creates a tunnel, enters the bean, and deposits her eggs. The larvae emerge and consume the endosperm, which is the most valuable part of the coffee seed. Once they reach maturity, the adults may emerge to colonize new berries, effectively continuing the cycle of destruction within the plantation.

The primary economic damage caused by Hypothenemus leprieuri includes the loss of bean mass and a significant decrease in the quality of the final product. Secondary damage often occurs due to the introduction of opportunistic fungi through the holes bored by the beetles, which can further rot the berries and compromise the safety and market value of the coffee harvest.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include:

• Strict sanitation practices to remove and destroy infested berries that remain on the trees or the ground.
• Use of specialized pheromone-based traps to monitor and suppress adult beetle populations.
• Application of bio-pesticides, such as Beauveria bassiana, which target the beetle naturally.
• Ensuring that harvested coffee is dried rapidly to moisture levels below the threshold required for beetle survival and reproduction.
