Coffee berry borer

The coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus maculicollis) is a member of the Coleoptera order, specifically within the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. It is recognized globally as one of the most destructive pests affecting coffee production, capable of causing significant economic losses to farmers in tropical regions.

This pest exclusively targets coffee plants, infesting berries at various stages of development. The adults bore into the endosperm of the coffee bean, creating entry points that compromise the structural integrity of the seed. Once established within a plantation, the pest can reproduce rapidly if environmental conditions are favorable.

The life cycle of this beetle is uniquely adapted to its environment. The entire development process, including egg, larval, and pupal stages, occurs inside the coffee berry.
