Tropical coffee beetle

Hypothenemus obscurus

Description

Systematic position: Hypothenemus obscurus belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. This insect is a significant member of the bark beetle group, known for its ability to infest the fruits and seeds of economically important tropical crops.

Affected crops: The beetle is a notorious pest of coffee cherries, but it also attacks cacao pods, macadamia nuts, avocados, and various other tropical fruit and nut species. It acts both as a field pest, causing pre-harvest losses, and as a storage pest, continuing its infestation cycle in harvested and stored agricultural products.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Hypothenemus obscurus is intimately associated with the host plant's seed. Females bore into the fruit to lay eggs inside the seed tissues. Larvae develop within the tunnel galleries, feeding on the endosperm. Given optimal temperature and humidity, the development is rapid, leading to overlapping generations throughout the growing season.

Nature of damage: The primary damage is caused by both adults and larvae boring into the seeds, which creates galleries. This activity causes physical destruction of the seeds, significant weight loss, and reduced quality of the final product. The mechanical damage also facilitates the entry of microorganisms, leading to rotting and secondary fungal contamination.

Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include meticulous orchard sanitation, such as removing all overripe or infested fallen fruit that serve as breeding grounds. Monitoring using attractant-based traps is crucial. Chemical control via targeted insecticide spraying or biological control using entomopathogenic fungi is employed depending on the severity of the infestation.
