Description
Systematic position. The insect Hypothenemus plumeriae belongs to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae, and the subfamily Scolytinae (bark beetles). It is a tiny, highly specialized pest that thrives by boring into the woody tissues of its host plants.
Host plants. As its name implies, the primary host is the Plumeria genus. However, due to its biological adaptability, this beetle has been identified on various woody ornamental plants in tropical and subtropical regions. It is frequently found in nurseries where dense plant populations facilitate the spread of the infestation.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is almost entirely completed within the plant stems and branches. Females bore small entry holes and construct tunnels inside the plant, where eggs are deposited. Larvae consume the internal woody tissue, which provides them with both nutrition and protection from environmental stressors and many natural predators.
Damage and economic impact. The feeding activity of the larvae destroys the vascular system of the branches, leading to a disruption of nutrient flow. Symptoms of infestation include:
- Withering and dieback of young shoots and stems.
- Small, pin-sized entry holes visible on the surface of branches.
- Yellowing and premature abscission of leaves.
- Increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial or fungal infections entering through the borer holes.
Control measures. Managing Hypothenemus plumeriae requires an integrated approach. The most critical step is physical sanitation: pruning and destroying all infested wood to reduce the beetle population. Chemical control is limited due to the insect's internal feeding habits, but the strategic application of systemic insecticides can protect the plant during the beetles' migration phase, when they emerge from existing tunnels to infest new growth.
